After COVID-19, 6 out of 10 people in their 20s to 40s have used online learning services, with the rate rising to over 70% among younger age groups. The courses covered a wide range of topics, including foreign languages, certifications, hobbies, and personal development.

Disconnected Journey.

As the popularity of online learning grows, a wide variety of classes, including dance classes, have become available. However, the process remains highly inconvenient. Both choreographers and students have to juggle multiple platforms every time they hold or take a class, repeating the same inefficient experience over and over again.

Built for Talking, Not Dancing

While more choreographers are offering live online dance classes, the environment to support them is still lacking. Most group video call platforms are designed for upper-body communication, which doesn’t work well for full-body dance lessons. As a result, it’s difficult for instructors to interact with students and share the kind of energy they would in a physical classroom.

User Rsearch & Persona

User Rsearch & Persona

I conducted a survey with approximately 200 students who took classes

at 1MILLION Dance Studio. I also carried out 1:1 interviews with 8 professional choreographers who have taught online dance classes and 5 students who have taken them.

Based on the research, I created personas for both choreographers and students.

I shared the user research insights with my team. Based on those insights,

we held several ideation sessions and defined the service’s main goal

along with key functional objectives.

Monetization Strategies

Monetization Strategies

After discussing monetization strategies with the business team, we concluded that a paid model was inevitable. I researched paid features in similar services and helped design a monetization model tailored to our platform.

I also conducted research on local regulations, in-app payment policies, and competitor practices in our target markets, and went on to establish the official community guidelines for 5six7eight.

Wireframe & Storyboard

I created rough wireframes based on all defined features and reviewed them

with the engineering team for proof of concept (PoC). After validating

feasibility through the PoC and establishing the timeline,

I updated the wireframes accordingly and finalized the PRD.

UX/UI Design

UX/UI Design

UX/UI Design

Based on the wireframes, I structured the information architecture to ensure ease of use.

For each screen, I organized the content and visual hierarchy while crafting UX writing to enhance the user experience.

I then designed UI assets in alignment with the branding, content structure, and hierarchy. To maintain consistency across the product, I established a design system.

User Test

User Test

I conducted internal test to assess the ease of learning and identify potential errors.

I adapted the Cognitive Walkthrough method to evaluate the user flow.

The test was conducted via video call, during which I recorded the tester's screen to analyze their actions.

Afterward, I created a questionnaire and compiled a post-test report,

which helped guide the identification of areas for improvement.

Agile.

Agile.

I joined the team when it was just starting to form, and the system was completely unstructured. Building that system alongside the CTO was also part of my responsibility. Creating the service plan/design while simultaneously establishing the operational structure was challenging. We held daily meetings with designers and developers, transparently sharing progress and setting goals for the next sprint just before each one ended. Distributing tasks was uncomfortable for all of us at first. I sometimes felt like I was being monitored, I also felt uncomfortable telling my team members what to do. Over time, as everyone openly shared progress and adjusted tasks together, we were able to work more efficiently. My team members trusted me, even in situations that might have felt a bit forceful, and supported me with active feedback during sprint retrospectives, helping us improve little by little after each sprint.

The best part of working with Agile was the daily scrum meetings. Even though everyone was tired in the morning, we woke up with a little small talk and coffee, creating a relaxed atmosphere where we could openly share progress and opinions. This honesty helped us successfully complete tough sprints. It was also a useful time to understand my colleagues’ work capabilities and styles. During the first two sprints, I couldn’t gauge my team members’ pace, so I overestimated and failed to achieve the set goals within the time frame. I probably saw daily scrum meetings as just a status update at first. After failing to complete the first two sprints, we focused more on the presentations during daily scrums, paying attention to each member’s pace and style to better allocate tasks. This made it easier to estimate schedules and handle upper management requests more wisely.

Relfection and Leaving for Growth

Relfection and Leaving for Growth

5six7eight was a project I poured a lot of love into from the very beginning. As the first Product Owner at 1MILLION, I was given the responsibility of managing the largest project, which came with a lot of pressure and concerns. Aside from the developers, I was working with people who had no background in IT, which made communication difficult. Understanding the culture of the dance scene was also a challenge. While I was able to learn about the culture through extensive research and conversations with choreographers, reporting to upper management often felt like talking to a wall. It took a long time to persuade them on the importance of processes like user research for higher-level planning. That process took longer than expected. However, I eventually succeeded in convincing them, and based on that, I was able to bring ideas to life, successfully completing the first round of user testing.

Given how much I invested in the project, it’s hard not to feel some regret that I couldn’t see it through to its official release. When I considered whether I could continue growing within the company, I realized the opportunities for further development weren’t as strong as I had hoped, so I made the bold decision to leave. That said, it wasn’t a decision without its lessons. Through experiences like sprint management and team leadership, I proved my leadership skills and became more confident that I can grow into a well-rounded product designer who excels in both design and management. Most importantly, when I first mentioned leaving to my team, the responses like, "I want to keep working with you," and "If there were senior in the company, I would want you to be the team leader," made me feel truly certain about my passion for product design and management.
